An Italian Adventure

This is a tour we designed for an international school in Surrey.  It combines the breathtaking scenery of the Amalfi Coast with the most important Roman sites in Italy.  There is also time devoted to the wonders of the Vatican. This itinerary makes a wonderful introduction to Italy.

Day 1     London – Naples –  Sorrento (3 nights)

Depart on our flight to Naples. On arrival we will take the autostrada around the Bay of Naples before driving along the famously scenic road that hugs the Amalfi coast. We will make stops at the towns of  Amalfi, and Positano.  After checking into our hotel, we will take a Walking Tour of central Sorrento.

Day 2      Pompeii and Vesuvius

This morning we will  visit the Roman city of Pompeii, destroyed when Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. Wandering around the ancient streets will give us a truly unique insight into life 2000 years ago.  We will then take a hike to the top of Mt.Vesuvius to see the crater.

Day 3       Day Trip to  Capri

Today we will take a full day trip to the beautiful island of Capri. From the port we take the funicular through the citrus groves up to the town.  We will then make the pleasant walk up to the impressive Villa of Tiberius, set on a cliff top. This villa was the pinnacle of luxury in Roman times. This afternoon, we will enjoy some free time to  wander through the narrow shopping streets or to visit the famous Blue Grotto (weather permitting).  We return to Sorrento this evening.

Day 4      Sorrento – Naples – Rome (3 nights)

This morning we will drive to Naples where we will visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, which contains the best of the artifacts discovered at Pompeii and Herculaneum. This evening, we will take a stroll to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.

Day 5       Rome

Our attention is focused today on the sites of Imperial Rome. Our first port of call this morning will be Passport Roma, a  multi-media introduction to things Roman. We will then visit the Pantheon, the Colosseum, and either the Imperial or Roman Forum.

This evening we will visit the Piazza Navona for some truly excellent gelato.

Day 6       Rome

Our day centres around the Vatican.  We will take a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica, climbing to the top for an unrivalled view of Rome. We will also visit the superb Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel. Time permitting, we will have an opportunity for some shopping later this afternoon.  A farewell dinner and activity will be arranged for this evening.

Day 7    Rome –Naples -  London
