An Austrian Adventure

This itinerary takes in the incredible scenery of the Austrian Alps, the charms of the old city of Salzburg and the highlights of Vienna.

Day 1              London – Vienna – Salzburg   (4 nights)

We Depart on our flight to Vienna. We will then travel to Salzburg, stopping in the picturesque town of Melk on the River Danube.  We will stroll through the old town and visit the Benedictine Abbey there.

 

Day 2               Salzburg

This morning we will take a Walking Tour of old Salzburg. We will then visit the Mozart Geburtshaus, the birthplace of Mozart, as well as the Mozart Wohnhaus, a museum dedicated to the musician’s life.  After lunch, we will tour the cathedral and then explore the Festung Hohensalzburg, the city’s medieval fortress.

 

Day 3                Salzburg

We will visit the Residenz, a palace that was once the home of Salzburg’s princes.  In the afternoon, we will go to the Salzburger Freilicht Museum, an outdoor museum of local history and crafts. There will be time for shopping in Salzburg’s famous Getreidegasse this evening.

 

Day 4               Day trip to Konigsee and Berchtesgaden

Today we start by a trip to and a boat trip on Konigsee, a lake hemmed in by the dramatic, almost vertical slopes of the Watzmann. Later we will go to the picturesque town of Berchtesgaden and take a trip up the incredible mountain road to Adolph Hitler's Eagle’s Nest.

 

Day 5              Salzburg – Linz – Vienna (3 nights)

We travel to Vienna today, making a stop at Linz, Austria’s third largest city.  We will visit the Hauptplatz, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe.  After checking into our hotel in Vienna, we will take an Walking Tour to get acquainted with the city.  There will be time to sample Viennese pastries at a coffeehouse this evening.

 

Day 6              Vienna

We will begin the day at the Hofburg Palace, the seat of Austrian power for 6 centuries.  We will then visit  magnificent St. Stephen’s Cathedral , founded in the 12th century.  We will take a guided tour, and if possible, climb the steeple for a unrivalled view of the city.  There will then be time to walk around Karntnerstrasse, one of Europe’s liveliest shopping streets.

 

Day 7             Vienna

We will visit the famous Spanish Riding School where (schedule permitting) we will watch a rehearsal of the Lippizaner horses. This afternoon we will visit the Kunthistoriche Museum with its fine collection of European paintings. This evening, we will have fun at Prater Amusement Park with its giant Ferris wheel that gives views over the whole city.

 

Day 8           Vienna - London

We depart Vienna today for our return flight to London.
