An Adventure in Berlin

This itinerary was designed for an international school in England, specifically to complement the students' studies of 20th century European history. There could be no better living classroom than Berlin for such an educational experience.

Day 1     Arrive Berlin (7 nights)

Depart on a direct flight to Berlin. On arrival, we will go to Alexanderplatz where we will go up the Fernsehturm (TV Tower) to get a wonderful panoramic introductory view of Berlin. We will then check into our hotel.

 

Day 2    Berlin

Today we will visit the Pergamon Museum on Berlin’s Museum Island. The museum houses one of the finest collections of ancient art in the world, including the massive Pergamon Altar and the Ishtar Gate from Babylon.  Later, we will stroll down Unter den Linden, one of Berlin’s most famous streets.  We will then see the Brandenburg Gate, symbol of Berlin and then visit the Tiergarten where we can hire boats on the lake if the weather is still warm.

This evening we will go to an English language film

 

Day 3     Berlin - World War II Day

This morning we will visit the Reichstag and the recently opened Judisches Museum.  The building itself is designed to commemorate the millions of Jews who perished in the Holocaust.  After lunch, we will see the dramatic Kaiser Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche, one of Berlin’s most famous landmarks.  The church was bombed in 1943 and a new octagonal church was built in 1963. There will also be shopping time on the world famous Kurfeursten Damm and in the KeDeWe.

This evening we will go to the Blub water theme park

 

Day 5    Berlin – Cold War Day

Today we will visit the innovative Story of Berlin Museum which includes a fascinating tour of an underground Cold War bunker. We will see part of what is left of the Berlin Wall as well.  This afternoon, we will visit Check Point Charlie, once the boundary between East and West Berlin.  We will go to the museum there.

This evening we will go a Hertha Berlin football if they are playing at home

 

Day 6     Day Trip to Potsdam

We will make a trip to Potsdam where we will visit the complex of palaces and gardens that make up Park Sanssouci, origninally designed as the summer home of Frederick the Great. This afternoon we will visit Spandau to see what everyday life is like for Berliners.

This evening we will go bowling.

 

Day 7       Berlin

This morning we will go to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp before returning to Berlin to visit the world famous Berlin Zoo.

This evening we will have a final meal together with a particularly German/Berlin flavour

 

Day 8       Berlin – London

We depart Berlin today for our return flight to London.
